Occupy This

You won’t find me at an Occupy protest. I’ve seen the mindless police brutality continually inflicted on peaceful protestors during this movement, and unfortunately it’s quelled my desire to march for change. I DO plan to protest corporate greed in my own way by spending my money at small, independent merchants and retailers this holiday season. I won’t be shopping at big chain stores because I will be buying from people, not corporations. Below are some easy ways to shop for holiday gifts and keep your money closer to people like you, and out of the hands of selfish corporations.

Sites like Etsy and Smashing Darling are great because you can shop from your couch and the insite search engines allow you to be able to search for specifics.

These cool bird decals are only $18, from NOUWALL on Etsy

Holiday craft fairs feature unique, handmade goods and yummy artisan foods and lots of local products that you may not even know about until you meet their maker at a show. One of the cool things about buying straight from the artist is that you get to talk to them and find out the story behind the product. Pieces have more meaning if there’s a story to go with them, always.

WE LOVE FIREFLY! This is one of my very favorite shows ever and if you’re in the Boulder/Denver area, you need to stop in. It’s Etsy come to life.

Local little gift shops and specialty stores are also full of well curated little lovelies.

This is owner Dawn Spencer Hurwitz at DSH Perfumes in Boulder–one of my favorite places to spend money…

Purchasing services for gifts are also a fabulous way to keep your money in your economy. Spa gift certificates for things like facials, mani-pedi’s, makeup for a big party, massages, reflexology are always big hits, fitness (yoga or pilates classes), personal chef (freshly cooked dinners for a week etc) are also great gifts to give.

The genius behind Alchemy Mineral Blends, Sally and Bre. They do beautiful makeup for special occasions as well as sell their very own line of beautifully crafted mineral makeup in outstanding colors.

Join me in making the commitment this holiday season to spend money in a mindful, sustainable way.

Firefly Gypsy Farm Market

It’s official–we’re headed to Boulder’s most fabulous craft fair–The Gypsy farm Market–September 17th and 18th. This is the third event produced by Firefly Handmade and you don’t want to miss this show–it’s one of those things you’ll hear people gushing about afterwards and be all envious that you didn’t make it.

This is an absolutely amazing little market full of hand crafted art made by people that live in Colorado. It’s like Etsy come to life–there are paintings and clothing, jewelry and sculpture, gorgeous body oils and letterpress and the list goes on. This is a juried show which means that the quality of the work being shown is all judged by specific standards. In other words, you won’t have to sift though booths of crocheted pot holders in Broncos colors (and yes–I worked a fair once where my booth neighbor was indeed selling those) in order to find the cool stuff. To whet your appetite for everything fabulously handmade and available for purchase at the market, please check out their blog, where they post daily about featured artists.

Perfectly Peridot

For all of you Leo’s and Virgo’s out there, you already know that the august birthstone is peridot…and for the rest of us (who have been obviously swept into some kind of time warp and can’t believe it could possibly be august already) well, now you know too. It’s time to celebrate the lush green beauty of the gemstone peridot. Our handmade Spellbound Ring got featured in a beautiful Etsy treasury showcasing so many lovely shades of green…such a fitting color to celebrate at the height of our summer growing season. Thanks for including us sharonclancydesigns! (who makes fabulous jewelry herself–check out her shop)!

The Suspended Gems necklace (one of my favorites; I made the prototype (pictured) and couldn’t bear to sell it so it became part of my ever growing collection) in another amazing ETSY treasury! Thanks to victoriaenglishcharm. Check out her beautiful photographs and lovely crafts in her etsy shop as well– they’re gorgeous! Her photograph “dreamy red poppies” is my favorite…

25% off sale- wow.

The trees are still barren and the wind is still chilly but we can feel a distinct difference between February and March around here. March carries with it a hint of spring, promises of green leaves and yellow sunshine and we couldn’t be happier about that.

To celebrate were having a big spring sale in our ETSY Shop. 25% off of everything in the store to be specific. This is the time to get that piece you’ve had your eye on because we rarely hold sales this big and certainly not store wide sales. You can thank the lil’ old month of March for this one! (and the fact that we have new collections coming for spring and need to make some room…)

Original Sin

Etsy Treasuries are themed collections of work by etsy artists, curated by etsy members.  They’re  usually quite beautiful, as the curators spend some obvious time choosing all sorts of lovely handcrafted and vintage pieces that fit within the theme and color palette of their unique collection.  I’m always very honored when someone uses one of my pieces in their treasury and this time my Apple made it into one by KGJB (who happens to be a stunning photographer as well as curator–  Wow!) entitled Original Sin….I am in LOVE with this one…the colors are amazing and the Garden of Eden was actually the original  inspiration behind the Apple necklace.  Below are a few of my favorites from the collection but click here (or above) to see the treasury in its entirety.  My thanks again to KGJB for including me.
